Program for Geopark week 22 – 28 of April 2013

Skaftárhreppur: The author Ófeigur Sigurðsson will give a talk about his book A Novel of Jon in Hotel Klaustur at 20:30 pm. It is about the fire clerk Jón Steingrímsson. Ófeigur was awarded the 2011 EU Prize for Literature (EUPL) for his second novel, A Novel of Jon.

Sigríður Guðmarsdóttir, a priest in Grafarholt, will also give a talk about “Nature and theology“.

Sveitabragginn, a local food store in Kirkjubæjarklaustur will be open from 12-18 pm, offering products from the Katla Geopark area.

 

Mýrdalshreppur: Short course in Spanish culture, food and phrases in Norður-Vík Youth Hostel in Vík from 13-17 pm. Teachers are Oscar Perdigon og Jurdana Martin Retegi. Register with Ragnhildur at ragnhildur@south.is or tel: 864-7011 before Friday  19th of April. Participation fee is 1000 kr.

 

Rangárþing eystra: Local artist of the month, Sólrún Björk, shows her work at the Farmers Market in Hvolsvöllur and gives a lesson in painting Monday at 14 pm. Sólrún ia a  qualified teacher in landscape painting, the sea, flora and fauna.

The Farmers market is open every day from 12-18 pm.

Local glass artist in Vík (Bakkabraut 6) invites guests to the gallery „Leirbrot og gler“  from 16-18 pm and Fossís (local ice-cream producer) will offer the guests waffles with ice-cream and hot chocolate.

The rescue unit Dagrenning in Hvolsvöllur invites guests to join them for a glacier walk on Sólheimajökull (glacier) with local guide. Departure is at 17 pm from the unit´s house in Hvolsvöllur. Hike up to Eyjafjallajökull with local guides from South Iceland Adventure. Participation fee is 5000 kr and equipment necessary is crampons and belt. It is possible to rent the equipment from South Iceland Adventure. Maximum 30 people can participate and the event is weather dependant. Saturday 27th of April

 

Skaftárhreppur

 

Field trip around Landbrot area near Kirkjubæjarklaustur with the local guide Jón Helgason. Jón has been collecting information about this area for many years. Departure is from Hotel Klaustur at 13 pm and arrival back at 18 pm. Number of participants are limited but the minimum is 10 people. Register with Ragnhildur at ragnhildur@south.is or tel: 864-7011 before Tuesday the  23rd of April. Participation fee is 3500 kr (afternoon snack included) .

Mýrdalshreppur

 

The Katla Geopark run 2013 will take place at Hjörleifshöfði near Vík and the distance is 11 km with timing. Participants run around and over Hjörleifshöfði or about 8 km in sand on lowland and then around 3 km circle up on the cape with 200 m elevation. Registration is online at www.hlaup.is or with USVS until 13 pm friday the 26th of April. Participation fee is 2500 kr for 15 years old and older and 1500 kr for 14 years and younger. Included in the fee is soup and bread after the run. Participants can go to the swimming  pool in Vík free of charge after the run. Every participant will get a medal.

Because the summer has started it is time to bring out the bicycles and have a biking trip in Skaftárhreppur. Departure will be from Eldvatn at 13 pm. The route is up Skaftártunga road, over Hrífunesheiði and short stop in Hrífunes. Then it carries on to Laufskálavarða and from there the Road 1 back to Eldvatn. Registration is with Rannveig at rannveig@katlageopark.is or tel. 857-0634 before Thursday the 25th of April. Participation fee is 1000 kr for adults and 500 kr for 16 years old and younger, included in the fee is light snack in Hrífunes.
