Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon temporarily closed!

Fjaðrárgljúfur closed!

Has reopened since January 22.

The Environment Agency has closed the area Fjaðrárgljúfur for nature protection. Due to thawing conditions the area has been damaged greatly by traffic and is prone to further damage. The area will remain closed until conditions change. Entering the area is strictly forbidden.

Please help us to protect the nature and respect closing in nature conservation areas

The area is unable to handle further traffic due to conditions in weather. The area is under alot of strain due to traversing feet and the vegetation alongside footpaths are in danger of severe damage.
Recent weather conditions, warm weather with a large amount of rain, have caused footpaths to rapidly deteriorate, resulting in visitors stepping outside the designated paths, hence drastically increasing the damage. The vegetation is currently dormant and is therefore EXTREMELY sensitive to damage.

Until conditions improve, the site will remain closed.

For more information on when the area will open again, follow the news feed from The Environment Agency of Iceland
