Take a look at the program for our Geopark Week 2017 18th to 25th of April.
A formal agreement was made on the 4th of April between Hvolsskóli primary school in Hvolsvöllur and Katla UNESCO Global Gepark for the school to become a "GeoSchool of Katla UNESCO Global Geopark". Criteria has been made for the function of the school and the role of the two bodies in the carrying out of the work ahead. Great enthusiasm for this initiative.

News this morning on UNESCO website of French President withnessing the effects of Global Warming in Katla Geopark
French President François Hollande, together with Icelandic President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, visited the Sólheimajökull glacier in Katla Global Geopark (Iceland) on 16 October to see first-hand the effects of climate change, in preparation for the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) later this year. Since 1931, when the annual measurements began, the Sólheimajökull glacier has retreated by more than a kilometre.
Glacial outburst has begun in Vatnajökull glacier. Could cause overflowing in Skaftá river causing road F208 between Vík and Eldgjá canyon to close. Travellers are also advised to stay away from Skaftárjökull, Tungnárjökull and Síðujökull glaciers.
