Katla Geopark took part in the summer festivities in Leikskálar in Vik yesterday

Katla Geopark took part in the summer festivities in Leikskálar in Vik yesterday. The Geopark was there with brochures and information about the Geopark and introduced some of its ongoing projects. The Geopark also brought along several rock samples in order for visitors to learn how rocks are commonly identified by geologists. A special tool we call “lúpa”, a small magnifier, was used to look more carefully at the mineral composition and finally the rock was identified with the help of a couple of books about rocks found in Iceland. The Geopark also brought along the GEO-VR, virtual reality gear,  where people could travel around the Geopark, watch videos, and learn about different types of eruptions found in Katla Geopark (subaerial, submarine and subglacial!). The virtual reality was very popular, especially among the younger generation, with a line of people waiting to try during the whole festival! Now that Covid is hopefully over, the possibility to introduce GEOVR in more locations in the Geopark is finally available! Below you can see some photos from yesterday 😊
