Katla Centre was founded in 2010 and is the cultural center of Mýrdalshreppur Municipality. Katla Centre runs an information center for tourists as well as carrying out various projects related to culture, tourism, and various types of academic work. In Katla Centre, there is also a study and teaching center run by The University Centre of the South and The Educational Network – Continuous Education in the South, where there are study facilities for students, good facilities for holding meetings and equipment for online meetings. The main attractions in Kötlusetri are the fun employees, the exhibition Mýrdalur, human life and nature, along with the oak boat Skaftfellingur.

Katla Centre also has a small store, where handmade local products and books from the region are for sale.

Katla Centre is open all year round, although with variable opening hours, during the summer months it is open longer than at other times of the year. Guests are always welcome, whether groups or individuals, but it is best to call or send an email in advance.
