Elective Courses at Víkurskóli School

Katla Geopark has taught elective courses at Víkurskóli in recent semesters, alongside overseeing the student research project at Víkurfjara beach, where students measure five beach profiles along the shoreline. The Víkurfjara project has been ongoing since January 2021 in which the students measure the profiles four times a year, and their results can be viewed here ( https://www.katlageopark.com/about-katla/research/vikurfjara-beach-project/). 

Concurrently, the Geopark has offered an elective course during the autumn semester, giving students the opportunity to learn more about beaches and the factors driving changes to them. An elective course was also held during the spring semester, during which students investigated erosion near the eastern side of the Dyrhólaós estuary; they did so by mapping the estuary's current erosional scarp location and mapping changes using older aerial imagery. Students also flew drones to capture images of the estuary, which will be used for mapping of any future changes of the estuary. Katla Geopark wishes to thank both Víkurskóli and its students for a rewarding collaboration on these elective courses.
