Measuring Sólheimajökull Outlet Glacier with Hvolsskóli School

For quite a few years now, the students at Hvolsskóli School have conducted annual GPS measurements of Sólheimajökull to track the changes occurring at the glacier. During last year’s measurements and again this year, the Geopark participated by giving students the opportunity to fly a drone near the glacier and capture aerial images of it and the surrounding area.

This has allowed students to view the glacier from a different perspective, and the drone images can be used in the future to compare the changes between measurements. The plan is for students to analyze these drone images during the winter of 2026–2027 and publish a short report on their findings regarding changes at the glacier, alongside the results of their GPS measurements.
