New Ömpuhellir Cave Record

Recently a new record was set in fitting as many people as possible into Ömpuhellir cave. The cave is close to Gljúfrabúi waterfall and it is believed that a hermitess used to live there. In 2009 the Rangárþing Municipality work school set a record of how many people could fit in there at the same time, 16 people in total, and they improved on the record in 2013 when the managed to fit 23 people in the cave.

That record has now been broken, as a group from the French organization Temps Jeunes managed to squeeze 26 students and teachers into the cave last summer. The group was in Iceland for about two weeks for a summer camp and decided to try to break the record when they read about it on the information sign that is next to the cave.

The accompanying photo is from a video that was sent to us to serve as proof of the new record, and now it remains to be seen whether the work school will attempt to reclaim the record next summer.
