Drangurinn í Drangshlíð
Folklore says that Grettir Ásmundarson was showing off his strength and knocked the rock out of Hrútafell, leaving the pass that is above Skarðshlíð.
However, the rock which is called “Drangurinn í Drangshlíð” is most likely an old sea stack and is mostly made of palagonite tuff and breccia, but it is not unlikely that the part of the sea stack that is now covered by soil is made of basalt.
Drangurinn is quite eroded, and as a result, caves and grottoes have formed in it. They have been used as outhouses and in 1928 there were for example a cowshed, 4 barns, 3 stables and a drying shed in and next to the sea stack.
Today, several houses are still standing and are good examples of traditional outhouses and buildings in Iceland.
