Landbrotshólar

Landbrotshólar is the most extensive rootless cone field in Iceland and was formed during the eruption of Eldgjá fissure in 939. Rootless cones can form when lava flows over wetlands. When the 1100°C hot lava comes in contact with water, explosions occur as the water boils instantly. The explosions eject material into the air and form craters on the surface. Today, most of the cones are covered with moss and grass, forming a lovely hilly landscape that is fun to hike through.
