Hafursey

Hafursey is a beautiful palagonite mountain on the Mýrdalssandur plain. The mountain is split by Klofgil Gorge with the highest point being Skálafell (582m) on the west side and Kistufell (513m) on the east side.

Located in Hafursey is the “Sel”, a significant historical site where six men took shelter during a glacial outburst flood (jökulhlaup) from Katla in 1755. The men´s signatures, along with the year they stayed there, are visible as markings on the cave´s wall as you enter.

The area near the mountain is also spectacular and Katla outlet glacier, with its magnificent ice cave, is not far from it. To explore and learn more about the area and the ice cave, the Geopark recommends taking a tour with one of our adventure partners.
